RSS, Netflix, and Tarts

I spent some time today updating our website at http://www.leyvas.org/celeyvas.htm with pictures and news about the kid. Now, one new thing I was playing around with was learning how to use an RSS feed. I used this by showing what's in my Netflix queue :)

Ahhhhh, Netflix. I just joined about a month ago because I wanted to see two of Gerry's movies that I couldn't buy or otherwise watch ("Shooters" and "The Jury" - a great UK mini-series about a murder trial and the personal trials of the jurors). So, I joined. :) K and I have been hooked since, loving the convenience of watching movies, throwing them in the mail, and having a new one sent to us in a couple of days.

Tomorrow we are taking a trip up to SD for a day of watching movies and eating pizza with a bunch of female Gerry fans. Don't laugh...I hope to see some of the more obscure films he's been in like "Jewel of the Sahara," "One More Kiss," and "Young Person's Guide to Becoming a Rock Star." :)

suffering in the heat

So, it seems that I had a case of heat exhaustion and/or heat stroke Thursday night. :(

It started about 10 pm that night, with some achy joints and sensitive skin. I told Kayla right away, "oh oh, I hope I'm not getting the flu." Then it spread all over: achy knees, shoulders, lower back, fingers and toes, and neck. Then I got really, really cold. Kayla covered me up in TWO blankets while I lay shivering, teeth chattering for a couple of hours. I could not seem to get warm, and kept shaking uncontrobally. My pulse was over a hundred (especially noted by the pounding in my ears when I tried to go to the bathroom). Kayla was worried, but I kept trying to make her laugh. She finally fell asleep and my shivering stopped at 1 am.

Then the headache began for the rest of Friday. I didn't know what was happening to me, but didn't think it was serious enough to alarm anyone. I thought it was a mild flu or some reaction to being on the Atkins diet for two weeks (which I now am off again due to all the Gatorades I've been drinking). Kayla is the one who has been running around in the heat with basketball and softball practice every day. She's the one we've been watching closely. All I do is stand there in the shade, drinking cold fluids, watching her run around. Go figure!

So, according to WebMD, I either had heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Could have been bad, but thank God it wasn't.

Softball and technology

Kayla joined a softball team this month. It started when she went to watch her friends play a game a few weeks ago. I asked her if she wanted to play with them and she said no. When I mentioned that it would be a good way for her to hang out more with her friends and talk, she said, "sign me up!" She's playing catcher. First game as a starter this Friday evening...

I spent today at a videoconference about the Leader's Role in educational technology. Good keynote speaker in Susan Patrick from the US Dept. of Ed. There was also a good presentation by Barbara Rose from Apple, and John Ramirez from ACME Animation. What did I learn? One good thing is to remind educators and schools to report to their boards (and to Sacramento) about the good things kids are doing with technology, not just to bring complaints to the Board. Another is to no longer call what I do as teaching technology integration, but use "transformation" instead: student learning, student motivation, and access to technology. Now, I have to go look for that new book called "The World is Flat." It was recommended several times. :)

How to blog...

All right, I see that this blogging thing isn't working....yet. :)

Here's how it works.
1) Email or call me and let me know you're intersted. I'll send you an invitation.

2) You go to www.blogger.com and create a new, FREE account (just a Username, Password, then choose a Display name [which people will see on this page] and your e-mail address [in case you forget your address]).

3) When Blogger.com asks you to complete Step 2, "Name you blog" and/or Step 3, SKIP THEM!

4) Next, go check your e-mail. You should have an invitation "Blogger blog invitation from" to join my "nplove Land." Just click on the activation link, which will require you to type in the Username and Password you just created in step #2.

4) Once you're logged in, you can click on the "nplove Land" link, which will show you any other posts, or conversations, that others have typed in. If you click on the New Post little green plus sign, you can create a new post! Just type your thoughts, then hit the Publish Post button. It will automatically appear at the www.leyvas.org/blog page.
